Fishing Matches Cancelled – posted 16 March 2020
All fishing matches at Poringland Lakes have been cancelled for the foreseeable future. The trustees took the decision following consultation with match organiser Alan Crabb.
“With the continuing spread of COVID-19 I think it would be irresponsible for us to go ahead with the forthcoming fishing matches, in fact by next Saturday government guidelines may well rule out such activities” said Alan.
“Some of us are in the high-risk age group but I’m sure none of us at whatever age would want to put ourselves at further risk. This means that all matches will be cancelled until further notice. I will keep you all informed as to when a resumption of these matches can take place. In the meantime, please keep safe and well” added Alan.
New Trophy to Remember Irene

Anglers competing in the Summer and Winter Leagues have a new trophy to contest.
Lakes’ president Dave Gudgeon has kindly presented a handsome shield to the Association in memory of his late wife Irene who sadly died earlier this year.
Known at the ‘Irene Gudgeon Memorial Shield’ the trophy will be presented to the angler amassing the greatest aggregate weight from each of the five match series.
“Hopefully it will encourage anglers to contest most of the matches and be a fitting memorial to my dear wife Irene” said Dave.
In addition to the Irene Gudgeon Memorial, trophies will be presented to the winners of the respective summer and winter grand prix series. The Glenn Duffield Cup, presented to the winning season ticket holder in the first match of the season, was won earlier by Justin Randall.
Glenn Remembered
Poringland Lakes season tickets holders have the opportunity to be the first to win a trophy in memory of former lakes founder and trustee Glenn Duffield.
Glenn’s sister Lynn has generously donated a handsome cup in memory of her brother who did so much to establish and develop the lakes. It is expected the Glenn Duffield Memorial fishing match will become an annual event.
“The trophy will be awarded to the highest placed season ticket holder” explained head bailiff Ray Noble. “We extend our thanks to Lynn for this kind and thoughtful gesture.”
The Glenn Duffield memorial match will take place on Saturday 7 May. The event is restricted to season ticket holders and their invited guests. Entries are still open so it’s not too late to enter the event. Please contact Alan Crabb at alanashley60@yahoo.co.uk.
Matches Planned
For the first time in over a decade, a fishing match will take place at Poringland Lakes – and, if it proves popular, it could pave the way to a series of matches during the summer months.
The brainchild of accomplished angler Alan Crabb, the inaugural match will be limited to season ticket holders and their invited guests and will take place on Saturday 7 May.
“If the first match proves popular, they could be staged on a regular basis, possibly on the first Saturday in each month” said organiser Alan Crabb.
Head bailiff Ray Noble was quick to praise the new initiative.
“The majority of our season ticket holders have never fished a match so this would be the ideal opportunity to have a go in a relaxed and informal atmosphere” said Ray.
Further information will appear online shortly. Season ticket holders will also receive match details via email. In the meantime, members wishing to try their hand should email Alan Crabb at alanashley60@yahoo.co.uk
